Supporting the Education

International testing scores indicate that the educational system in Turkey is far from producing satisfactory results especially in the socio-economically disadvantaged areas. We believe that all children are ours and we work diligently to create equal opportunities for as many children as possible to the best of our ability.

Computer Labs

Selçuklu İlkokulu, Eyyubiye, Şanlıurfa
We know that it is crucial for today’s children to have computer skills and we realize that being equipped with the basic language of the information technologies will make a difference for their future success. We are also very aware of the inequalities that inhibits access to resources in disadvantaged communities; once again we say that ‘All Children are Ours’ and try to make computers and the computer related activities accessible to all children all over the country, enlarging their worlds and dreams about the future by building computer labs or donating equipment, providing with software, educating teachers and students. In the computer labs we built in İstanbul, and Şanlıurfa children are getting ready for the future.

Robotics and Coding Workshops

We are building robotics, coding, digital design, and maker works spaces with 3D printers at schools to promote maker culture, curiosity, and dexterity as well as analytical thinking in terms of algorithms. We encourage them to say ‘I can, and I will ‘instead of ‘I cannot, not for me
We also educate teachers for the sustainability of the projects and provide tablets and computers accordingly. At 3 schools in Istanbul, one in Kocaeli and one in Elazığ, students have been learning code writing in their classrooms. Even the pandemic could not stop us! When children could not go to school, we sent coding kits and notebooks to more than 300 homes and made the classes online.

Our Children at Workshops

Our Children at an Art Workshop,
2019 İstanbul Fatih Kırımlı Aslanbey İlkokulu
We organize workshops for our children to explore their areas of interest, develop new skills and build a safe, lively atmosphere where they can express themselves better in creative ways . For 3rd and 4th graders of an elementary school in Fatih we assembled workshops in 8 different subjects like Nature and Environment, Drama, Philosophy, English, Math, Music, Psychodrama, Arts and Crafts. At the start of the school year children chose a subject, and till the end of the year, every two weeks our volunteer instructors went to their classrooms to work with the children in their areas of interest.

Summer Schools

Children spending their long summer holidays in non-appropriate home environments lose their school year knowledge more easily and even their physical development might be impaired as well as cognitive. With our summer school program, we wanted to help prevent this setback; in the end it was a lot of fun and wonderful memories both for us and the children, as well as our many young volunteers giving us a hand in the organization. During the summer school children have a very busy schedule from creating their own designs at Robotics class to learning to put their buttons at Crafts class, from taking pictures at the photography workshop to learning about Waste Hierarchy at Nature and Environment class, from listening to the history of their neighborhood from an expert to singing, dancing, painting, ballplaying, from watching movies to reading tons of books! By the end of summer school, it is always very hard for everyone to say goodbye!

Teacher Seminars

Prof. Dr. Selahattin Dilidüzgün,
Children’s Literature and Reading Culture /
Teacher Seminar, Şişli 2019
We believe that one of the most important aspects of contributing to our children’s education is to support their teachers who spend the most time with them. Therefore, we organize seminars and workshops for teachers addressing their professional needs and help ease the problems they might face while proudly and dutifully executing their missions as educators. In 2017 we signed a protocol with the Şişli National Education Department and during the year we conducted teacher seminars led by our expert supporters, academicians, counselors, writers, and artists in a diverse array of subjects ranging from nonviolent communication skills to children’s literature, from storytelling to philosophy for children, from communication skills with parents to tricks of teaching math, from art education to peer pressure and bullying, from Montessori to discrimination. The feedback we received from the participants gave us insight and determination to continue these seminars.

Parent Seminars

Parents are the most influential and important people in children’s development, and it is by no means parents’ most important job to raise their children. Unfortunately, there is no school or formal education for this task. As BÇBD we try to assist their parents in the well-being of our children. We organize meetings with our experts on children’s development, communicating with children and understanding mutual needs.

Dodo is Telling Fairy Tales

Dodo masal anlatıyor
Youtube playlist
During the pandemic, when the children had to stay at home, we designed a project to reach children from an online platform. Our project symbol was Dodo, the owl, an avid reader, and storyteller which we also used as the symbol of our in-class book reading activities at schools, Dodo is Reading. We chose 19 fairy tales from a very diverse selection of sources, tales we were told in our childhood, and some we read, with language and themes suitable for kinder garden and elementary school children. We eventually ended up writing these well-known fairy tales in our words and a fresh perspective under the supervision of our pedagogical counselor Selda Özen. Since we aspired to tell the stories in an old fashioned, improvisational style we felt the need to get online education sessions from professional storytellers. All the brainstorming, design meetings, and education sessions were held online, and our volunteer storytellers recorded their fairy tales from their homes as for the spirit of the times! Besides recorded tales, a set of exercises and work sheets fostering critical thinking and creativity in children were prepared to be also published online to help parents and adults spend quality time with their children while working on these exercises together.
Dodo is Telling Fairy Tales was published on our YouTube channel on 23rd April 2021.

Children’s Library and Playhouse, İZMİR

On 30th November 2020, an earthquake hit İzmir, and caused significant damage in specific areas. Our observations in the field showed us that besides providing material supplies for families and children in need, we had to build a sustainable support system in our field of expertise. Then came Children’s Book and Playhouse.

İzmir Büyükşehir Municipality replaced the families affected by the earthquake to a new social development project, Uzundere where there was Children’s and Youth Center. We set up our library in this center to create a lively atmosphere for children to use the library, learn to borrow and return the books and toys, play board games together and do their homework under the supervision of a volunteer adult assigned by our association. Volunteers from the ‘Architecture for All Association ‘designed this beautiful, purpose-built open plan area and our associations young volunteers from Medical Schools, equipped with the orientation they got from our experts assist children at their activities and content from the programs like Dodo is Reading, Dodo is Telling Fairy Tales, and İklim Abla.
